The Two-Canteen Shower: A Marine Corps Lesson That Still Work

The Two-Canteen Shower: A Marine Corps Lesson That Still Work

Two Canteen Shower

Most people don't spend much time thinking about soap.

It's something you grab, use, and forget about until the next shower.

That was certainly true for me.

Like a lot of people, I never had a complicated grooming routine. I wanted something that cleaned well, smelled good, and let me get on with my day. For years, I used whatever happened to be in the shower without giving it much thought.

Looking back, I don't think that's unusual. Many of us simply use the products we grew up with. Only recently have more people begun paying closer attention to skincare and grooming, driven less by trends than by a growing interest in taking better care of themselves. Research reflects that shift, with more consumers looking for products that combine simplicity with performance.

Long before that trend, though, I learned a lesson in the Marine Corps that completely changed how I thought about staying clean.

It was called the two-canteen shower.

Two Canteens. That's It.

The concept couldn't be simpler.

One canteen gets you wet.

Soap.

The second canteen rinses you off.

That's your shower.

No luxury. No convenience. Just enough water to get clean and move on.

Years later, I realized you don't even need canteens. Two water bottles work just as well.

The system hasn't changed.

Why I Still Use It

Over the years, I've trained at a lot of jiu-jitsu academies.

Some have beautiful locker rooms.

Others... not so much.

Sometimes the showers are crowded.

Sometimes they're less than inviting.

Sometimes there isn't a shower at all.

Rather than wait around—or skip cleaning up altogether—I go back to the same solution I learned years ago.

Two bottles.

A bar of soap.

A towel if I remembered to bring one.

It isn't glamorous, but it works.

I've used the two-canteen shower behind my car after training, in quiet outdoor spaces after a long workout, and anywhere I could find a little privacy.

The point isn't where you do it.

The point is that you can.

A Different Way to Think About Self-Care

The older I get, the more I appreciate simple systems.

The two-canteen shower taught me that taking care of yourself doesn't require perfect conditions.

You don't need an elaborate routine.

You don't need ten different products.

You just need something that works.

That lesson has stayed with me far longer than I ever expected.

Why MuckMount Exists

When I started MuckMount, I kept coming back to that idea.

I wasn't interested in creating another product with flashy marketing or complicated promises.

I wanted a soap for people who work hard, train hard, and don't always have ideal conditions.

People who appreciate gear that earns its place.

Whether you're leaving the gym, finishing a shift, training on the mats, or heading out on an adventure, the goal is the same:

Get clean.

Recover.

Move on.

That's the philosophy behind MuckMount.

Sometimes the Best Solutions Are the Simplest

I still laugh when I think about learning to shower with two canteens.

At the time, it felt like just another lesson in Marine Corps training.

Looking back, it taught me something much bigger.

Good systems don't have to be complicated.

They just have to work.

The two-canteen shower still does.

And that's exactly the standard we had in mind when we created MuckMount.
